There's no denying that Designfruit offers a limited number and variety of Photoshop brushes. However, the sets that Designfruit does offer are high quality and attractive, and any new Photoshop creative suite user will find them helpful. Additionally, the website offers a decent number of features and technical-support options.
The website only offers just more than a dozen premium brush sets, a couple free sets and one brush pack, which includes three of the premium sets. Such a limited selection is useful if you're new to Photoshop because websites with greater offerings can be quite overwhelming. Advanced and professional users will likely only be able to use this site to fill holes in their collections, if anything.
We liked that all of the premium sets come with free samples of some of the brushes included so you can try them out and get a feel for them before making a financial commitment. You can use any of your purchases for personal or commercial use without worrying about royalties. The PS brushes available on Designfruit are compatible with any Photoshop creative suite version, from the original CS to the newest CS 5.5.
The site does offer sales from time to time, and has a blog for user updates. There is also a place to sign up for email updates, which are somewhat like a newsletter, only a little more casual. You can also connect with Designfruit on Facebook, Twitter and Flickr.
We were a bit disappointed that the main browsing page does not have a way to preview the brushes contained in a set. Instead, you have to click the set to open its details page, where you will find brush previews and other information. We also found it odd that there is no simple search bar tool on the site, but with only about a dozen sets to choose from, searching for a specific one is as easy as glancing at the main page. If you want, you can filter sets by clicking a certain category, such as Urban, Fine Art, Business and more.
With so few actual brush sets to offer, Designfruit actually has a decent array of different brush styles. Some sets fall into two categories, like the Grungy Bouquet set or the Flowering Frenzy Borders and Brushes set, which helps boost Designfruit's variety a bit.
The website offers five different floral-themed sets and two swirl-themed sets. There is also a set of doodles, one of urban-themed borders, one Asian-influenced foliage set, one of geometric-looking circles, a tattoo-themed set and one of tiled patterns. Unfortunately, that's all the selection there is for premium Photoshop brushes.
The help and support section has an email address to contact the staff, but our email went unanswered. This was quite a disappointment because the other help and support options are comparatively sparse. There is a user message board that turns up a fair amount of information. The forum even has a FAQs section to address questions that many users have, but this forum can easily get off topic if it isn't moderated well.
The website itself doesn't have a FAQs section, so specific questions about ordering or site usage are likely to go unaddressed. We were disappointed to see a lack of alternate communication, such as a phone number, and a lack of brush-installation instructions.
In all, this is a relatively basic website in terms of selection and variety, and the technical support options leave much to be desired. However, the website features are solid and the designs of the Photoshop brushes themselves are of good quality, so Designfruit remains a feasible option for those who are new to the Photoshop scene.
Pros
The website offers a decent number of features, from social media links to a blog, sales and more.
Cons
Selection and number of sets available is quite low and the technical support team is unresponsive.
This is a fair option for new users, but professional designers won’t find the site very useful.
